It was dark when Dan returned to Bennie’s cabin. The glow from the television lit the window and yet he hadn’t watched TV that day. He’d never turned the set on and he definitely hadn’t left it on.

Dan stepped from his car, drew his Beretta and released the safety. He could hear the television from within the cabin. It was blaring as if someone had cranked it to full volume.

He crept to the door and pressed himself against the cabin exterior, scanning the property, but the dark woods made it impossible to make out if someone crouched nearby. His flashlight was inside the cabin.

Moving along the exterior, Dan peeked in windows, searching for an intruder, but the cabin looked unchanged. He saw no one tucked into a corner. Finally, after he’d walked the entire exterior and returned to the door, Dan twisted the knob and shoved the door open, leading with his gun.

He went straight to the television and flipped it off, but the movement didn’t cast the cabin into silence. Instead, more sounds found him. Rushing water. The kitchen faucet was turned on, water pouring into the sink.

He turned slowly, gun raised, searching for movement. Nothing. He went to the sink and turned the handle to the off position.

More rushing water sounded from the bathroom. Dan pushed the door to the bathroom open with his foot and reached in, flicking on the light. It was empty, but both the sink and bathtub faucet were cranked all the way to the left, water surging out and into the drains. He turned off each, skin prickling over his arms and neck.

No other sounds met his ears, but he moved methodically through the cabin, searching the two bedrooms and the closets before returning to the front door and locking it.
